KARACHI:
As the temperature starts to rise in the lead up to the general elections, former Governor Punjab and a founding member of the Pakistan Peoples Party, Ghulam Mustafa Khar has announced his intent to join the Pir Pagara’s Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (PML-F).
The National People’s Party too has announced to form a political alliance with the PML-F.
Talking to media after holding three-hour long meeting with the Pir Pagara on Thursday, Khar said that he had taken the decision after giving the matter due consideration and consulting with his family members and friends. He said that he would formally announce his affiliation with PML-F in a couple of days.
Khar belongs to village Khar Ghari located in Kot Adu, a tehsil in Muzaffargarh district of Punjab. He was a close ally of PPP founder Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and one of the founding members of the party. During 1970s he served as Chief Minister Punjab. After the military coup, he was jailed by General Ziaul Haq. He joined and left PPP many times. But soon after Benazir Bhutto returned to country in 2007, he developed differences with her. Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar, is his niece.
On the other hand National Peoples Party (NPP), led by Ghulam Murtaza Khan Jatoi, also called on the Pir Pagra at the Raja residence in Karachi, and announced his plans to form an election alliance with PML-F. Jatoi, an MNA, said that the alliance would contest the election in Sindh and Punjab.
Talking to The Express Tribune PML-F General Secretary in Sindh, Imtiaz Shaikh said that many other parties and groups have approached them recently to form an alliance. He said that the PML-F has been trying to expend its alliance, not only in Sindh, but also in Punjab and other provinces. “The leaders of PML-F will visit Punjab soon in order to have meetings with different political parties,” he said.
“PML-F and NPP will form a joint strategy on different issues and will support each other’s candidates in the upcoming electione,” Shaikh said, adding that some influential families of Sindh are also willing to join their party to fill the political vacuum in the province.
Meanwhile, Murtaza Jatoi said that not only Sindh, but both the parties would contest elections in Punjab.
