Pakistan boxing on the canvas

Tussle between secretary, president delays camp.

KARACHI:

After the agony of missing out on a place in the London Olympics, Pakistan boxers are now suffering due to the ongoing tussle between the federation’s president and secretary as a training camp faces delay.

The Pakistan Boxing Federation (PBF) had planned the camp for the first week of May, following the 34th National Boxing Championship, but those plans are in total disarray after the clash between Doda Khan and Akram Khan, with the pair due to settle a score in the general body meeting next month.

Both senior officials have laid serious corruption charges against each other following Pakistan’s failure to seal a place in the 2012 Olympics.

“The federation had shortlisted 15 boxers but things are at a standstill due to the fight,” a senior PBF official told The Express Tribune.

Doda claimed that the secretary took bribes to include undeserving pugilists in the national squad while Akram has blamed the president of misappropriating funds. The official also added that the PBF officials have not been paid for three months.
