KARACHI: The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) is all set to file a Constitutional petition against Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani for continuing to hold office despite being convicted for contempt of court by the Supreme Court, a release said on Wednesday.

Jamal Siddiqui, the senior media coordinator for the Karachi PTI media centre, while talking to The Express Tribune said that they were currently finalising the petition, and it will submitted in the Sindh High Court on Thursday morning. The petition will be jointly filed by the General Secretary of PTI Dr Arif Alvi, and PTI Sindh president Sardar Nadir Akmal Khan Leghari.

Gilani has faced pressure to forego the seat of Prime Minister after he was convicted, by which, parties argue, he stands automatically disqualified from the National Assembly and hence cannot hold the office of the Prime Minister. He, however, argues that he can only be disqualified if the Speaker National Assembly deems that his offence disqualifies him, or is declared as such by the Election Commission.

PTI against division of Sindh

In the press conference at Karachi Press Club, Leghari condemned the acts of violence on Tuesday following a rally in Karachi.

A release said that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), which had taken part in the Awami Tehreek’s rally, was equally responsible for the deaths and injuries of citizens.

The release also established PTI official policy on the creation of a new province in Sindh. It said that the party considered the division of Sindh as “unacceptable”.

It added that law and order situation was being used by some parties to strengthen their vote banks, and that some elements were deliberately stoking conflicts. That those sitting in Punjab have started an hypocritical intervention in Sindh, despite having lost the confidence of the people in Punjab.

The PTI demanded deweaponisation of Karachi, and action against the culprits. It also called for a suo moto notice of the killings and loss of property by the Supreme Court.
