IMCG convocation: Stepping into a world of possibilities
Degrees, awards and accolades given to meritorious students.
ISLAMABAD:
Anticipation reigned high among the outgoing students who gathered at 27th convocation of Islamabad College for Girls (Postgraduate) F-7/4 here on Tuesday. A total of 244 graduate and 35 postgraduates were awarded degrees, alongside 26 roll of honour awards and sports prizes.
The college’s mass communication discipline stands out as it’s the only college in Islamabad or Punjab that offers the subject, according to Principal Ghazala Khalid.
She said, “We were granted a licence by PEMRA to broadcast educational, informational and entertainment programmes.”
Mehrunnisa was awarded the Hamid Alvi gold medal for securing first position in mass communication in 2010. The Azra Raza Excellence Award that accompanies a cash reward of Rs50,000 was given to Fehmida Akhtar, a BSc graduate. She not only topped in the college but also secured fourth position in Punjab University.
Faiza Anwar was declared the Player of the Year whereas Saima Rehman attained gold medal along with a cash prize in the Pakistan Inter-board Badminton Tournament.
Practical knowledge is important for the college, said Principal Khalid, adding that education is an ongoing process and as much is learnt from practical life as from books.
But books also play an important part in education. Khalid emphasised their importance by requesting chief guest Secretary Defence and Cabinet Nargis Sethi to help the institution develop a modern library.
“Presently our library is only four rooms with 18,000 books; we are in dire need that the library be housed in a proper setting to facilitate the learning process,” she said. The chief guest promised to take action on the matter, and appreciated the contributions and services of the college in the past 27 years.
Shields of service were awarded to faculty members who have served the college for 25 years: Rubina Mughal, Bushra Bano and Sabtain Tahira (late).
The principal urged students to continue their pursuit of knowledge outside their alma mater saying, “Strengthen yourselves with virtues that will enable you to achieve your goals; try to cultivate patience, industry, devotion, honesty, faith and hope as with such weapons you will not fail.”
