LAHORE: The city government is in the process of finalising menus for free sehri and iftar at designated Ramazan Dastarkhwans.

The City District Government of Lahore (CDGL) announced in its Ramazan Contingency Plan 2010, unveiled on Saturday, that it would set up 18 such sites where the poor can get free meals at the beginning and end of the fast.

The city government will likely officially sanction the menus on Wednesday, the day before Ramazan is expected to start, a CDGL official said. He said the decision had been delayed because the officials concerned were busy with flood relief activities.

Amin Akber Chopra, senior administration officer in the CDGL, said that the government had more or less decided to serve dates, sharbat (a sweet, cold drink), three fruits, chicken qorma and naan at iftar. He said that each dastarkhwan would be able to accommodate 200 to 300 people at a time.

The Ramazan Dastarkhwans plan is an initiative of the chief minister’s and is supported by donations from private citizens. The CDGL plans to set up three dastarkhwans each in Data Gunj Buksh Town, Gulberg Town, Ravi Town and Allama Iqbal Town; two in Shalimar Town; and one each in Wagha Town, Aziz Bhatti Town, Samanabad Town and Nishter Town.
