Money exchangers call for stringent security
Increasing number of incidents of people being waylaid after collecting money from currency exchanges is a concern.
MIRPUR:
The Mirpur Currency Changers Association has appealed to the government to ensure security to legally operating currency exchanges in the city and to their customers.
A representative of the association said that the increasing number of incidents of people being waylaid after collecting money from currency exchanges is a cause of concern. He appealed to the government to implement a foolproof security system to ensure safety to the life and property of the people and also of currency dealers.
He said that the customers who are robbed after collecting money from currency exchanges have started blaming the business owners, which is “unfair” and damaging the businesses’ repute.
Businessmen running their exchanges legally cannot be held responsible for these crimes and it is the duty of the government to provide a safe environment to the people and the business community, he said.
He said that only a few local money changers are running their businesses legally and hold valid licenses issued by the State Bank of Pakistan. Out of a total of 35 money exchanges, only six hold valid licences, he added.
