Contempt of court: Babar Awan indicted, refuses to accept verdict

Babar Awan says no contempt law exists in Pakistan.

ISLAMABAD:
The Supreme Court of Pakistan indicted former law minister Babar Awan on charges of contempt of court on Thursday, Express News reported.

Awan, however, refused to accept the verdict. “No law on contempt of court exists in the country,” said Awan.

The hearing was conducted by a three-member bench, headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.

Earlier, Awan had tendered an unconditional apology to the court, whereas the chief justice said that the apology letter was a confession of crime by Awan.

The former law minister was prosecuted for contempt of court adjudication after he criticised an apex court verdict handed down on December 1, 2011, pertaining to the formation of a judicial commission to probe the Memogate scandal.
