FIA harassing steel manufacturers: LCCI

The LCCI has appealed to the PM and Chief Justice to constitute a high-powered committee to sort out issues.

LAHORE:
The Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) has appealed to the prime minister and the chief justice to constitute a high-powered committee to sort out issues between steel manufacturers and Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM) by identifying the real plunderers of the PSM as the steel manufacturers are being harassed by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).

A statement issued here on Monday said that LCCI President Zafar Iqbal Chaudhry, Senior Vice President Ijaz A Mumtaz and Vice President Faisal Iqbal Sheikh held a meeting with a delegation of steel manufacturers including Chairman Pakistan Steel Pipe Association (PSPA) Sanaullah, Vice Chairman Manzoor Hussain Kazmi and PSPA members Mian Mohammad Usman and Major Zubair.

The LCCI office-bearers said that harassment of steel manufacturers by FIA officials was not only causing undue damage to the economic activity but could also deprive thousands of workers associated with the sector of their jobs.

They said that steel manufacturers are true and genuine taxpayers who are paying millions of rupees to the national exchequer annually but unfortunately the action has been launched without even consulting the apex trade bodies.

They said that it seemed that they (manufacturers) were being made a scapegoat to ensure a safe passage to the black sheep involved in wrongdoing at the PSM.

The LCCI urged the government to intervene into the matter so that people associated with the steel industry could be able to do their businesses with peace of mind in these challenging times.
