Indian defence ministry clears $660m deal for artillery guns: Report
India will buy 145 ultra-light 155mm howitzer guns.
The Indian defence ministry cleared a long-pending $660 million proposal to buy 145 ultra-light howitzer guns on Friday, reported IANS.
According defence ministry sources, the Indian army is buying artillery guns after 27 years since the Bofors guns payoff scandal emerged.
The report stated that the Defence Acquisition Council, headed by Defence Minister AK Antony, cleared the deal for the M777 BAE Systems guns that will be bought through the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) route of the US government.
The deal was cleared following a report by a committee that studied the suitability of the weapon system. The army had recommended the gun following a ‘series of rigorous trials’, said the report.
The gun is believed to be light enough to be air lifted for quick deployment.
