Post-conviction: What British PM would think of Gilani, wonders Nawaz
Claims he is not against the premier as a person, but against his behaviour.
SUKKUR:
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Chief Nawaz Sharif claimed that Prime Minister Gilani’s refusal to accept the verdict of the Supreme Court of Pakistan is in violation of the constitution and law of the land.
Addressing a public gathering in Garhi Khairo district in Jacobabad on Tuesday, Nawaz said it would have been better for him to step down soon after the apex court announced its verdict, but he refused to do so. What will he do now that the Supreme Court has announced detailed verdict, he questioned.
Giving examples of other countries, Nawaz said that prime ministers and ministers step down following allegations of corruption, but here in Pakistan such things make no difference. He said the premier has gone to the UK today without even considering what the British prime minister will think of him when he finds out that he is meeting a ‘convicted’ premier.
Nawaz alleged that President Zardari deposited Rs5.5 billion in a Swiss bank and the Supreme Court wants the premier to bring that money back to the country because it belongs to the people of Pakistan. He claimed he was not against Gilani as a person, but he is against his behaviour, which “was bringing shame to the country.”
Taking account of the four-year tenure of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) government, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Chief Nawaz Sharif claimed that instead of delivering anything, it has taken away everything from the people and given them miseries, inflation, unemployment, lawlessness, power and gas crisis.
He said that the people of Sindh were innocent and committed a big mistake by electing the PPP to power. Where was the government when the people of Sindh were drowning in flood water, he asked, adding that it was the PML-N that rushed to the rescue of marooned people.
Sharif claimed that the Punjab government distributed Watan cards to flood victims and laptops to deserving students, but in Sindh people were still going hungry. The people of Sindh, he said, voted for the PPP only because they were emotionally charged due to the untimely death of Benazir Bhutto.
He said the PPP has enjoyed power for 15 years, but have done nothing for the welfare of people. On the other hand, he said, the PML-N ruled the country twice for two years and two-and-a-half years but during that short period, they changed the fate of the people of Pakistan.
