Appointment: Court wants to see committee record

The chief justice said the dignity of such an historic educational institute must be maintained.

LAHORE:
Hearing a petition against the reappointment of Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran as Punjab University Vice Chancellor (VC), the Lahore High Court Chief Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed on Friday summoned record of the VC Search Committee. The CJ adjourned further hearing till May 18. The chief justice said the dignity of such an historic educational institute must be maintained. Representing the petitioner, Advocate Aftab Ahmad Bajwa said Prof Kamran was reappointed on January 1, 2012 in violation of the law and rules. He said the record would reveal that the respondent had been involved in financial illegalities as well as illegal appointments. The counsel said the impugned reappointment was not only in violation of the Punjab University Act but also of the Supreme Court judgments against re-employment of retired officers. He said that the respondent had already completed his term as vice chancellor and in reappointing him the government had deprived eligible candidates of their lawful right. He prayed to the court to take notice of the illegality and set aside the re-appointment.
