Acquitted, bailed: Prisoners to be released early

LHC removed 146-year-old hurdle to early release of prisoners after their acquittal or grant of bails by tehsil courts

LAHORE:
Lahore High Court Chief Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed on Thursday removed a 146-year-old hurdle to the early release of prisoners after their acquittal or grant of bails by tehsil courts. The chief justice directed the judges to issue release orders at tehsil levels to ensure prompt release of these prisoners instead of sending them to district courts. Since 1896, all courts at tehsil level have been sending their bail or acquittal orders to district courts which then prepared the release orders to be sent to jails. This exercise sometimes took several days and the litigants had to bear extra expenses. However, the chief justice, during a Thursday hearing, removed the requirement of sending release orders to district courts.
