Elderly need social stimulation, say expert
We consider old homes taboo, but fail to provide physical, psychological support to elders in our homes, says expert.
KARACHI:
Experts lamented the lack of availability of social activities for the elderly at a seminar titled “Geriatric Concerns-Opportunities and Challenges,” which was organised by the physical education department of the Karachi University on Sunday.
“One out of four seniors suffers from mental health issues like depression, Alzheimer’s disease and dementia,” said the Sindh Minister for Health Dr Sagheer Ahmed. KU vice chancellor Prof. Dr Mohammad Qaiser said that it was unfortunate that elderly people were getting neglected, while the society seemed to increasingly focus on the youth.
“[We] consider old homes as taboo, but fail to provide physical and psychological [support] to elders in our own homes.” Dr Masood Qureshi said that retirement and a lack of engagement in social activities could have negative impact on a person’s life. The department head Basit Ansari said that geriatric care was one of the least discussed topics in the society.
