FAISALABAD: A rise in corruption and nepotism in the country is responsible for people becoming unhappier in their outlook, Public Relations Director Abid Kamalvi said on Sunday.

He was speaking at the launch of a compilation of Urdu poetry Har Pal Meray Sath Tum Ho by Rukhsana Sehar.

Kamalvi said the country was more prosperous and the people happier before the 1970s. He said this was on account of a lower level of corruption. The director said the solution to unhappiness lay in promotion of a merit-based system.

Rukhsana Sehar said most of the poems in the book depicted human suffering and intolerant attitudes.

Mehvish Ahmed, a member of the audience, said she was not an avid reader of poetry but she was impressed by a couple of poems she had read while skimming through the book during the ceremony.

Ghulam Fareed said he felt he owed the author a quick read of the book because of the declining trend of reading among the people.

The ceremony at the Faisalabad Arts Council (FAC) was also attended by All Pakistan Women’s Association  General Secretary Anjum Alam Shah, FAC Resident Director Tariq Javaid, Dr Jaffar Hasan Mubarak, Rizwana Naqvi, Tahir Iqbal and Dr Najeeb Shah.
