LAHORE:

The Environment Protection Department (EPD) on Friday ordered the Aziz Bhatti and Wagha town administrations to construct trunk sewers parallel to the Lahore Branch Canal from the BRB Canal to Harbanspura. The length of sewerage lines needed is around 4km.

A trunk sewer exists from Harbanspura southwards drains into the Hadiara drain. On Friday, a team led by EPD Additional Secretary Khalid Farooq inspected six housing societies in the area and issued environment protection orders (EPOs) to the relevant TMAs against the dumping of domestic sewage into the canal. The inspection was meant to determine whether or not earlier EPOs issued in November 2011 had been complied with.

The sewage of about 12 housing societies and Sozo Water Park is being directly discharged into the Lahore Branch Canal. An EPO has also been issued to the Sozo Water Park administration.

Six of the housing societies lie in Wagha Town and Aziz Bhatti Town between Harbanspura and BRB Canal. The other six are located between Dharampura and Thokar Niaz Beg.

Two sewerage inlets from Nawabpura society flow into the canal, one each from Rizwan Housing Scheme, Hajveri Housing Scheme and Medical housing scheme.

The TMAs have also been directed to remove sewerage pipes discharging waste into the canal. EPA spokesman Naseemur Rehman Shah said, “They do not realise the recreational value of the canal, particularly for the poor. Young people living in slums near Harbanspura often seek respite from summer heat with a dip,” he said.

Wagha TMO Afzal Rehan said several meetings have been held with the commissioner and the DCO in this regard. “We hope to start building the trunk sewer before the monsoon,” he added.

Aziz Bhatti TMO Usman Liaqat was unavailable for comment.
