FAISALABAD:

Five men were injured when a section of a 100-year old, run down building collapsed in Katchery Bazaar in Faisalabad.

The building, constructed by Chaudhary Baghwan Das in 1904, was being used by a newspaper agency. The injured men were all newspaper hawkers collecting newspapers for distribution. Dozens of motorcycles and bicycles parked at the building were also damaged by the debris.

Volunteers and Rescue personnel pulled the injured men out of the debris and took them to the DHQ hospital. Doctors treating them said the condition of one Maulvi Eash Mohammad was serious.

After the incident, members of the Hawkers Workers Union protested against the local government for what they called its negligence.

Malik Zafar Mahmood, the union president, asked, “How could such an old, dangerous building be allowed for commercial use?”

He demanded action against those responsible and compensation for those who were injured or had suffered damage to their vehicles.

He demanded that the government provide a safe building for the newspaper market.

MPA Khawaja Islam visited the scene and pacified the protestors and assured a newspapers’ market will be created soon. He said that Rs 25,000 each would be paid to hawkers whose motorcycles were damaged.

The assistant commissioner (AC) Shafiur Rehman suspended the building inspector Nasir Shehzad after the incident.
