Families of ‘encounter’ deceased cry murder

Police claim two constables injured in episode.

FAISALABAD:
Relatives of a man killed in what People’s Colony police reported as a shootout on Saturday night held a protest demonstration on Sunday against police alleging and extrajudicial killing.

Police claimed that Gul Sher, 29, resident of Railway Colony, was a criminal who had shot two police constables before police gunned him down.

Sher’s relatives and some neighbours blocked the Jhal Chowk and chanted slogans against police insisting it was a fake encounter.

Mohammad Ashraf, a relative of Sher, said that police had shot him without any justification. “He was riding a motorcycle when they shot him dead for not stopping at a picket. He was not a criminal. Police are now framing him to save their skin,” he said.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, Operations SSP Mohammad Sadiq Dogar said that Peoples’ Colony SHO Mohammad Asim had set up a picket near Jhal Chowk in Khananua following a tip-off and had signalled a motorcycle not carrying a registration plate for a search.

Instead, he said the men riding the motorcycle opened fire on police, hitting constables Sharjeel Akbar and Zaryab, who were later taken to Allied Hospital in treatment.

He said that Sher was hit when police returned the fire but his accomplices managed to escape. He said police took him to DHQ hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

He said that he had inspected the scene along with Madina Town SP Tahir Maqsood and directed police to arrest Sher’s accomplices.

He said, “Police have nine cases against Sher. I cannot share their details just yet but police will welcome a judicial inquiry into the incident.”
