Manchar Lake: Six desalination plants installed

Plants will provide safe drinking water to fishermen.

LAHORE:

The Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) has completed the task of installing six desalination plants along Manchar Lake which will ensure potable water to people living in areas adjacent to the lake.

The plants were installed following Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry’s directive, during hearing of a suo motu notice, to Wapda and the Sindh government to install desalination plants along the lake in order to provide contamination-free and safe drinking water to fishermen of the area.

The water treatment plants have a cumulative capacity of processing 6,000 litres per hour. Over 2,000 families of fishermen, comprising 16,000 to 20,000 people, will be provided potable water by treating high saline effluent of the lake.

Wapda said it had also made arrangements for effective operation and maintenance of the plants.

In addition to the six plants, Wapda is also installing another six plants of the same capacity on behalf of the Sindh government. These plants, expected to be operational by April 30, will provide safe drinking water to another 16,000 to 20,000 people living close to the Manchar Lake.
