‘Polo is for the brave and the rich’

Foreigners take part in local events every year.

KARACHI:
“Polo is a sport for the brave and the rich. It  can’t be a common sport. Some are rich but not brave and some are brave but not rich. My players are not ordinary. They are my pride.”

The polo season is underway – the MB Bandara Championship concludes today in Rawalpindi – and Ghulam Rasool, manager of the Rawalpindi Polo Club makes his love for the sport quite clear.

He adds that since polo is usually played in the northern areas of the country, the best time is from March to May and in October and November.

Polo is deemed an elite sport, also one that is played mostly by those involved with the military.

“It’s a misconception that polo is played just by the army people,” Lahore Polo club manager Zuhaib Khan told The Express Tribune. “Our club was formed in 1886 and we’ve had more civilians as members. It’s a glamorous sport. We get players from England, Argentina, Chile and South Africa coming here. Until 2008, Indians were also very active members of the club.”
