Affordable education: One Rupee schools for the underprivileged
There are now around 55 such schools in the province of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa with almost 2,500 students enrolled.
Today, when inflation has almost put every necessity out of reach of the common man, One Rupee schools - set up in underdeveloped areas of Peshawar - are a blessing.
These NGO-run schools provide education to the underprivileged children for only Re1 per day.
Established with the aim to increase the area’s literacy rate, the schools are not just a source of knowledge for the children but also provide a respectable source of income to the educated adults of the neighbourhood.
By providing good education to students at such a low cost, the schools have earned themselves a good reputation amongst the area residents, who now want similar schools to be set up in other areas as well.
After 18 years of service, the number of One Rupee schools set up by the NGO in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa has reached 55, with 2,500 students enrolled.
