ECP to hold by-elections for Punjab Assembly vacant seats

The commission decided to hold by-polls for PP-243 and PP-245 in Dera Ghazi Khan on May 7.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Monday decided to hold by-elections for the two vacant seats of Punjab Assembly in May this year.

ECP officials told The Express Tribune that the decision was taken during a high-level meeting headed by acting Chief Election Commissioner Justice Mian Shakirullah Jan.

The commission decided to hold by-polls for PP-243 and PP-245 in Dera Ghazi Khan on May 7. The ECP also reviewed the process of formation of transparent electoral rolls for next general elections and overall progress of the preparation of electoral rolls. The commission further directed its officials to ensure credible and error-free electoral rolls as early as possible.


The acting CEC expressed satisfaction over the work related to forthcoming by-elections, while ordered speeding up the process of preparing separate electoral rolls.

He also approved revised-schedule for election in both the constituencies of Dera Ghazi Khan.

The meeting was attended by Justice (retd) Muhammad Roshan Essani, Justice (retd) Riaz Kayani, Justice (retd) Shazad Akbar Khan and Justice (retd) Fazalur Rehman. Acting Secretary Akhtar Hussain Sabir and other senior officers were also present in the meeting.
