The convict, Nasrullah alias Nasru, resident of Salam, is also accused of shooting and killing the complainant, Bilquis Shahzad, to avenge the harassment case she registered against him in Bhalwal police station on March, 20, 2009.
The murder trial is underway at a sessions court.
Shahzad’s husband Iqbal Ahmed, who is the complainant in the murder case, said the court had yet to record evidences in the matter.
Shahzad, a midwife at a non-governmental organisation, and a colleague had been killed near Chak 12 on November 29, 2010 allegedly by Nasrullah. They were on their way back from a medical camp they arranged in Kot Momin. The suspect was arrested by Kot Momin police on a complaint filed against him by Shahzad’s husband.
The verdict in the harassment case (registered under the Telegraph Act) was announced by Civil Judge Mumtaz Ahmad Mughal in the last week of March.
Speaking to The Express Tribune, Shahzad’s father-in-law Mirza Muhammad Iqbal, 72, said that Nasrullah had been harassing her since she assisted his wife during her pregnancy.
“His wife delivered a baby at a clinic Shahzad ran next to our house in Bhalwal,” he added. “She gave her cell phone number to his wife so that she could consult her if needed. But Nasrullah started calling her and harassing her,” he said.
He said she had lodged the FIR against Nasrullah on his advice. Later, the accused obtained a pre-arrest bail from a local court.
