KARACHI:

The Sindh High Court issued notices on Friday for April 12 on a petition challenging the Sindh Assembly’s decision to unseat Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim in the wake of his protracted absence.

The petition was filed by his son Arbab Aurangzeb.

Rahim has challenged a resolution passed by the assembly. According to the rules, the house has to take up requests for leave separately for each day. However, the assembly’s secretariat kept his requests on hold and later clubbed them together to present on a single day. This was in violation of the rules, argued his lawyer Rasheed A Razvi.

This was based on mala fide intention, Razvi submitted. Rahim was being ‘punished’ by the Sindh government for not supporting the ruling party’s candidates in the senate elections or withdrawing his party’s candidate.

The petition was heard on Friday by a specially constituted bench of Justice Faisal Arab and Justice Muhammad Shafi Siddiqui. Several judges had earlier declined to hear the petition. The respondents include the Sindh Assembly secretary and law minister.
