QAU celebrates Nowruz to promote cultural diversity, better understanding

Embassies of six neighbouring countries set up stalls at QAU; diplomats, alumni participate with families.

ISLAMABAD:

In a first for Quaid-i-Azam University, a colourful event to promote the traditional celebration of Nowruz was held as a multinational family affair on Thursday.

Diplomats from six neighbouring countries – Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Iran, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan – and their families actively took part in the event, which was adorned with exquisite stalls depicting the culture, literature and heritage of their respective countries.

The stalls were populated by teams from the embassies and displayed their traditional dresses, food, cultural material and literature.

Not to be left behind, the event organisers – members of Diplomatic Insight, a bilingual magazine, and the department of History – set up a stall to promote the cultural and deep-rooted traditional links between Pakistan and the regional countries that celebrate the centuries-old traditional festival of Nowruz.

The festival marks the advent of spring and the start of the Persian New Year; it is usually celebrated on March 21.

The event was jointly inaugurated by National Database and Registration Authority Deputy Chairperson Tariq Malik and QAU Vice Chancellor Dr Masoom Yasinzai, along with ambassadors and deputy head of missions of each of the representing countries.

Asif Noor, an organiser, said the aim of the event was to celebrate Nowruz and share its cultural and traditional understanding with Pakistan’s youth. He said that such events not only help foster better relations with the respective countries, but also help understand the global cultural environment.

QAU alumni also participated in the event along with their families and took keen interest in the cultural diversity of the Central Asian countries.
