G-B unrest: PML-N accuses leaders of orchestrating violence

G-B PML-N Chief Coordinator Siddiqul Farooq says G-B CM and Rehman Malik instigated the violence.

ISLAMABAD:

The Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) alleged on Wednesday that the recent spate of violence in Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) was orchestrated by the rulers to divert the nation’s attention from corruption of the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party and problems faced by the masses.

“G-B Chief Minister Syed Mehdi Shah and Interior Minister Rehman Malik instigated the violence,” G-B PML-N Chief Coordinator Siddiqul Farooq stated at a press conference.

Representatives of his party warned the government of possible riots in the area, he said, further alleging that the chief minister, following orders of the interior minister for ‘personal gains’, took no action to prevent the outbreak of violence.

The administration of Gilgit imposed curfew in the city in wake of the fresh wave of sectarian violence that claimed more than a dozen lives and injured several others on Tuesday.

The provincial and federal governments should provide financial support to the families of deceased persons as well as health care to the injured victims, Farooq demanded.

He said that troops of the armed forces that have been sent there to maintain law and order situation should nab the perpetrators of violence to avert any untoward incident in the future.

Despite the presence of armed forces, rangers and intelligence agencies’ personnel in the area, people still carry arms freely, he alleged, adding that “there would be no law and order situation in the area if local leaders stopped patronising miscreants.”
