‘Police inaction’: Relatives create ruckus after driver shot

Rickshaw driver Hafiq Liaqat was standing outside his house when two motorcycle riders opened fire.

FAISALABAD:

Family members blamed police for lapse investigations after a rickshaw driver was murdered in the Sargodha Road area on Wednesday.

Neighbour and eyewitness Muhammad Ajmal said, “Rickshaw driver Hafiq Liaqat was standing outside his house in Mohallah Ghausia Abad when two motorcycle riders opened fire. He received serious bullet injuries and died on the spot.” He added, “I could not identify who it was.”

After the shooting, relatives and locals put his body on Sheikhupura Road and blocked it for over an hour. Protestors burnt tyres, pelted nearby shops and vehicles and chanted slogans against police.

Muhammad Akram, a relative of the deceased, said, “Three members of our family had been killed in an inheritance dispute but police have taken no action in either murder. This encouraged our rivals to kill Liaqat, too.” Madina Town SP Chaudhry Maqsood Ahmad said, “I will personally ascertain the facts of the case. If it is proven that police officials were lax, action will be initiated against the officials concerned.” The body had been sent for postmortem and no complaint had been filed by the family till this report was filed.
