Girl slips into coma due to lack of oxygen during loadshedding
Shazia is in the ICU at the moment and her condition is said to be ‘critical’.
LAHORE:
A 19-year-old girl named Shazia has slipped into a coma at Jinnah hospital in Lahore due to unannounced loadshedding during her operation, Express News reported on Monday.
Shazia is in the ICU at the moment, her condition is reported to be ‘critical’ and it is difficult to tell when she will regain consciousness.
According to sources, Shazia was suffering from appendicitis when the doctors operated on her, during which the electricity went out and the ventilator stopped functioning. The lack of oxygen negatively affected Shazia’s brain.
The principal of Allama Iqbal Medical College, Dr Javed Akram formed a five member team to investigate the matter and the team confirmed that Shazia went into a coma due to the sudden lack of oxygen when the electricity went out.
Regarding backup during the operation, Dr Javed Akram said that when electricity fluctuates due to unannounced load shedding, it takes some time to switch to either generator or UPS, which not only results in the absence of electricity but also damages expensive machinery at the hospital.
A petition is being prepared at the hospital that will be presented n the Supreme Court and the chief justice will be requested to look into the matter.
A 10-12 hour loadshedding is a norm at the Jinnah hospital.
