The number of First Information Reports (FIRs) filed for counterfeiting currency have continued to increase, says a Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN) report released on Thursday.
The report, based on monitoring of 78 offices of the District Police Officers across Pakistan, said counterfeiting currency was not only the most frequent but also the most widely reported crime – 1,902 FIRs were recorded for it in 43 districts. Lahore topped the list for such FIRs with 644, followed by Faisalabad (260) and Gujranwala (174).
“We try our best to add new features in currency notes to make counterfeiting difficult,” the spokesperson of State Bank of Pakistan said while talking to The Express Tribune, “but it is very difficult to completely control counterfeiting of currency notes anywhere in the world.”
