LAHORE:

The Shahdara SHO was told on Wednesday to submit his comments, by March 26, on a petition that seeks directions to the official for registering an FIR against four people.

The suspects, according to the petitioner, forced a nikahkhwan to change the dower after the nikah had been performed. The court application does not say whether the suspects are related to the petitioner’s wife.

Petitioner Naseem Sheraz says that he solemnised nikah with one Rashida Perveen on February 10.

The agreed amount of dower was Rs5,000, he says, which he paid at the time of the nikah. According to Sheraz, when he went to get a copy of his nikahnama he was stunned to see that the dower had been changed to Rs1 million and 50 tolas of gold jewellery. Also, Rs15,000 a month as maintenance had been added.

Sheraz says when he asked Hafiz Jameel, the nikah khwan, about the change he was told that Muhammad Imtiaz, Sarfraz Begum, Muhammad Rafi and an unidentified man had “forced” him to change the dower two days after the nikah.

Jameel told Sheraz that the suspects had threatened to kill him if he did not do as they wished.

The petitioner says that he had approached the suspects to settle the matter but was threatened with “dire consequences”.

He then went to the SHO for registration of an FIR against the suspects, but his request was ignored.
