Water management: Cooperation between Oman, Pakistan urged

Water Management Research Centre inaugurated .

FAISALABAD: Pakistan and Oman should enhance cooperation in the field of water management research to find solutions for water crisis, Omani Ambassador to Pakistan Mohamed Said Allawati said on Sunday.

He was speaking at the concluding session of an on-farm water management training session organised by the Post Graduate Research Centre, University of Agriculture, for farmers from Balochistan.

Earlier, the Omani ambassador inaugurated a newly-constructed Water Management Research Centre at the university. He also visited the Community College, the drip irrigation project site and the Punjab Agricultural Research Society (PARS).

He said for many countries water scarcity would be the most pressing challenge in the coming years. He said Pakistan and Oman could benefit from joint research to avoid the impending crisis.

He addressed the farmers and said that Oman shared a close relationship with Balochistan as there was a sizeable Baloch population in Oman.

UAF Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan thanked Oman for launching several education and healthcare projects in Balochistan.

Agricultural Engineering Dean Prof Rai Niaz said a drip irrigation project had recently been launched by the university on a 200 acre area to promote the use of the technology.

He said drip irrigation method could help conserve on water for irrigation. The professor said the method was also helpful in increasing agricultural output.
