Education termed vital defence against extremism

The first vice chancellors' conference of the province was organised by the Punjab Centre of Excellence on Countering Violent Extremism under the National Action Plan and Policy for Preventing Violent Extremism 2024.
The VCs of 84 universities attended the conference chaired by Punjab Cabinet Committee on Law-and-Order Chairman Khawaja Salman Rafique.
The provincial minister said on the occasion that everyone would have to unite and take practical steps for the establishment of peace. A harmonious society will be established with the involvement of all sections of society, especially the youth, he added.
Home Secretary Dr Ahmed Javed Qazi said education is recognised as the first line of defence to prevent violent extremism.
Experts said that Punjab, being the centre of higher education, holds an important position in shaping national social, intellectual and civic trends. Due to the large number of youth in Punjab, higher educational institutions are important drivers of social harmony.
