Zardari approves special remissions for prisoners

A special remission of 90 days has been granted to the prisoners convicted for life imprisonment.

ISLAMABAD:
President Asif Ali Zardari on Sunday approved granting of special remissions in criminals' sentences on the occasion of Pakistan Day on March 23, 2012, officials said.

The officials added that President Zardari approved the reduced sentence on the advice of Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani.

A special remission of 90 days has been granted to the prisoners convicted for life imprisonment, while remission of 45 days has been granted to all other convicts who had committed crimes including murder, espionage and anti-state activities, added the official statement.


The special remission will be applicable only if the convicts have undergone two-third of their imprisonment.

A special remission of one year has been approved for the female prisoners with accompanying children and are imprisoned for crimes other than murder and terrorism.

An entirety remission for female prisoners who are 60 years of age or above and for male prisoners who are 65 years of age or above who have undergone at least one-third of their sentence has also been approved.

The entirety remission has also been approved for juvenile convicts – under 18 years of age – who have served one-third of their sentence except those involved in murder, terrorism and anti-state activities, the presidential order said.
