As many as two on-board students sustained injuries while the glass-windows of the buses were also smashed in, said a university official.
Karachi University had announced on Friday that the university would remain open on Saturday and all academic activities will continue despite Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s (MQM) call to observe a Black Day and the business community’s strike in the metropolis.
The university’s transport committee chairman Zulqarnain Shadab told The Express Tribune that the ‘mishaps’ were reported in Gulberg and Safoora Chowrangi areas of the city.
“Our bus drivers are experienced, so they managed to drive past the miscreants without bearing much loss,” he said adding that the offenders pelted stones at the buses.
A number of university employees and students told The Express Tribune that several other buses were also stopped by unidentified men in different areas of the city including Dawood Chowrangi, Orangi 2 ½ and Shah Faisal Colony areas.
The miscreants, who were in groups, asked the drivers to return back to the university, cancelling their trips.
According to Shadab, the attendance in the university was very thin on Saturday as many point buses arrived back almost empty.
“A large number of students choose to commute through public transport which is off the road due to the strike,” he said, adding that the university will decide whether to dispatch the point buses or not in the afternoon after analysing the law and order situation of the city.

you mean KU buses attacked by MQM on MQM's "Black day" ...
Let those who call for the strike, and forced to shut down KU buses, should pay for damage incurred by people as well as government institutions, which in fact are build/paid from people’s money.
@Syed: Have you ever been to shah faisal colony? MQM in charge
@MQM Hater, Do you really think MQM will do this in Karachi University..it has been done by someone who don't like MQM presence in Karachi University.
@Salman Orangiwala: @Mohammad Ali Siddiqui: who would aggigate on the day of strike. people who called the strike or those who dint call? lets see how smart you guys are
Please save Karachi from MQM..
@Syed & Salman Orangiwala: Stop selling delusions. Gulberg, Safoora Chowrangi, Dawood Chowrangi, Orangi 2 ½ and Shah Faisal Colony... all these areas are marked with active presence of MQM with sector and a number of unit offices and regarded as its strongholds.
This statement tells enough that those 'miscreants' were none other than MQM's goons who wanted to see the strike full and complete.
@Syed: half .... Sorry sir i am from shah faisal colony and 90% is in mqm control, only green town, azeem purs is not in mqm's control.
Clean up operation is needed, bring back Dr.Zulfiquar Mirza!!
@sick of this nonsense, stop commenting on things you have no information about, almost half of shah Faisal is under major influence of PPI, and NOT MQM.
It is very well understood, that other parties and groups are trying to do what the MQM has been doing; Now, when the criminals cannot benefit from the crime themselves, they are protesting against the crime.
@Mohammad Ali Siddiqui: What do you mean by "in Karachi or Sindh" please do not separate the two!
@Sick of non sense , where are you from ? Mars I presume . Ever been to Shah Faisla Colony ? Ever heard Aikumber and Paanchnumber of Shah Faisal Colony and who lives in between and around ?? Get yourself informed first
Destroying our own country and then complaining that the western world is out to get us...
@Mohammad Ali Siddiqui: Intimidated souls like you, sir, are responsible for maintaining the status quo - a dangerous foe - amid soaring thuggery, extortion, target-killings etc because every time you come forward and tell the masses to bow down.
@PTI2013: lol Your 'naivete' is killing me, PTI wannabe!
Clearly someone doesn't like MQMs protest against extortionists in Karachi. ANP, control yourself!
"The miscreants," who were in groups, asked the drivers to return back to the university, cancelling their trips.
ET seems to have learnt art of euphamism from Jang; they call them with sanitized "Mushtail Nawjawan," unless they belong to any other group; then they are "Dahashatgard."
After MQM gave a call to observe the Black Day in Karachi, the University of Karachi officials should have announced to close the University to avoid the untoward incidents.
Every ones knows that if a call is given by MQM in Karachi or Sindh, the entire system is collapsed.
