Matriculation: Over 3,000 students allowed to sit exams and appear in practicals

SHC questions board’s powers to issue age-limit policies.

KARACHI:

The Sindh High ordered the Board of Secondary Education on Friday “to facilitate and cause no further harassment to students of the petitioner” ie the Sindh Private School Management Association, and let them sit the practical and theory exams already underway.

More than 3,000 students will benefit from the court order.

The bench earlier heard Abrar Hasan, a senior lawyer representing the Board of Secondary Education, who submitted that a number of petitions have been filed on the issue of debarring students from appearing in exams.

The counsel said that it would be appropriate to club them together and hear them all so that the court’s time is saved. Seeking an adjournment on the same grounds, he suggested a hearing on Monday or next Tuesday.

The bench observed that the case revolves round three basic questions, foremost being the powers of the board to decide such matters.

There are thousands of students who are affected and the policy appears to be unfair and the first impression one gets is that a great injustice was being done.

After hearing the counsels for the petitioner and the board, the court ordered that “students shall be allowed to sit exams and appear in the practicals too.”

The counsel for private schools submitted at this stage that unless admit cards are issued the court’s orders would become meaningless.

The bench then passed its order.

Justice Maqbool Baqar and Justice Nisar Muhammad Shaikh adjourned the hearing till March 26.
