“One should pursue a career in a subject that interests them and that they are in love with. Success will follow,” says Muhammad Abdur Rauf – a talented 21-year-old student from Lahore who has recently landed an enviable job at the Microsoft Corporation… before completing his bachelor’s degree in computer science.
A computer science major at the Lahore University of Management Science’s (LUMS) School of Science and Engineering, Rauf was recently hired by Microsoft as a Software Development Engineer. Rauf’s new job will require him to use his skills testing computer programmes and software for technical faults, or ‘bugs’ as they are more commonly referred to.
It was, however, only after a rigorous hiring process that Rauf secured a place at Microsoft. He applied for the opening through the company’s website in December last year, and was interviewed over the phone by representatives in February. According to the LUMS website, he was then asked to travel to Dubai – all expenses paid – where he gave four technical interviews during which his previous projects were scrutinised and discussed in detail. He was also asked to solve algorithms and do programmed coding. In his last interview, he was given a coding problem which he was asked to debug. After an exceptional performance, Microsoft offered him a job. He soon accepted. He will be required to report to the company’s headquarters in Seattle, Washington on October 1, 2012.
Rauf says that one winning strategy that enabled him to succeed was his in-depth research about his employer, prior to his job application. He had been told that a team from Microsoft’s Dubai division will interview him. As preparation, he says that he studied a research paper of the very team that was to interview him. “I wanted to understand how they work and what their specific interests are,” he says.
In the past, Rauf has freelanced for some local and international companies. He also has experience in developing software applications for Android-powered devices.
Born in Bahawalnagar, Rauf has lived most of his life in Lahore. There, he attended The Trust School and completed his FSc from the Government College Lahore before he was admitted to LUMS.
Rauf does not come from an affluent family; his father is a civil servant. Keeping his limitations in mind, Rauf applied for LUMS’ National Outreach Program – a need and merit based scholarship. Deemed to be a deserving candidate, he was soon admitted in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at LUMS.
“However, after taking a few courses in humanities and social sciences, I realised that these were not my cup of tea,” he says. “I switched to the computer science major because I had prior interest in the subject”.
As evidenced, Rauf has done well in the subject of his choosing; he also works as a research associate in the computer sciences department. His research interest is in programming languages.
When asked if he ever thought about what he’ll do after landing a dream job, he says: “this is just the beginning! I want some experience working there, and then I want to think about higher studies in a specialised field.”
His advice to his compatriots? Students should not be afraid to fail; they should learn instead to face adversity and handle it to the best of their ability. After identifying one’s interest, Rauf says, one should stay focused and move in a direction that helps them achieve their goals.
“Success didn’t just knock on my door one fine day,” he says.

How many of you making fun of this boy were actually picked by Microsoft from university? I know it's not a big deal to work for US giants while being in USA but not when you are 21 year old in Lahore. This boy deserves applause and this is kind of news that will inspire lot of young Pakistani students. Well done.
.....and the salary ? :O
I am glad to hear about this guy.Stay blessed!!
Seems more like an advertisement for LUMS :)
Farooq baloch running out of News stories. He had to arrange something to stay in ET
Great job..wish you all the best.
Hundreds of Pakistani doctors, after scoring great in USMLE, got residency positions in different medical specialties in major teaching hospitals of US two weeks ago, but not a single story in any newspaper
With all due respect to the new employee, this story seems more like a marketing campaign of LUMS
@alam khurshid: there must be tens of thousands of people working from here, but all of them I believe did not find a job at the age of 21 before completing their bachelors degree. Please learn to appreciate - this young boy rightly deserves it!
Jawad, buddy your comment is more sensible. Don't know how much LUMS have paid ET to publish this news. COngrats to Rauf though!
Well, I am working for Chevron, before that I worked for Siemens. Where is my news ET?
I know graduates from mediocre Pakistani universities who are serving in Microsoft, Cisco or pursuing their further educations in top international universities. What exactly is the purpose of this article? I guess the main purpose of this article was appreciating LUMS, not Rauf.
Congratulations Rauf proud of you but please never forget your country after you success do something for your motherland
@anon: You are such a typical dud
@alam khurshid: Mr tech guy Pakistan's population is not 250 million by any census or estimation. Check your facts before.
Also, learn to appreciate and celebrate the good work :-)
Great Achievement indeed and LUMS need to celebrate this. As its LUMS that selected Rauf for four years in NOP Program and gave free tution, free hostel and even handsome allowance for four years. LUMS picked up his talent, channelized it to give him what millions of people don’t get in developing countries i.e recognition of talent ..So what matters more is to see who He was, and what he has achieved. If LUMS is marketing this success story, than it is not because LUMS need marketing, its just to raise more funds and make the donors believe in LUMS so that more students like Rauf could come to LUMS and fulfill their passions.

Dear All, yes it is true many pakistanis working in multinational companies, but rauf got job in Microsoft Corp at the age of 21 before completing his degree, isnt it good ? i think this should appreciate. Thanks
good achievement with great efforts and leads to those who feel subjects are difficult me, just have to work hard, ALLAH give results.
@Ali: That is not true. My brother in law studied in Pakistan all his life and was offered a job at Microsoft while he was still in his Bachelors. There are hundreds of Pakistani's working for great MNC's over the world. Sure, this was an achievement for Rauf, and I'm happy for him, but definitely not newsworthy. If we started making a big deal about everybody in Pakistan getting a job at a big firm in the US, you would never read anything else in the papers.
wewell done Rauf...and thanks to ET for sharing and appreciating talented young man.
Is this news? he isnt the first person from pakistan to get a job before graduation in Microsoft, infact not even the first fronm LUMS.
god bless you boy,amin.
Well It's a big news for someone as young as him. Pakistani papers place on front page people getting a certain number of A's on high school exams such as O and A-levels. And think attending a university in U.S. is the highest accomplishment in the world.
Though this an entry level job, at least he has been recruiting and is on track. And by the way, many Pakistanis may work at these companies, not many have reached to a C level position such as CEO, CFO, CIO etc.
So getting 20 A's in O-levels or getting university scholarship is a very low criteria to measure against in a nation of 200 million.
@Ibrahim Rajar: That is excellent and we should appreciate that boy. But still, according to me, this is first step for him towards big goals and life long achievement, and news should be for achievements like if someone helps the society with his work etc etc. Or might be i am wrong.
Attacking anyone due to his/her university or school is really bad.
@Usman Shahid: Story is that he belongs to a district which so called backward and he belongs to family which is not an affluent family. He did strive to gain gain knowledge according to his interest and proved that he can win success in the field of his interest. If a newspaper wrote his story to encouraging the poor students to follow this guy what is wrong with the newspaper. Narrow minded people are not ready swallow this news and commenting against the newspaper and LUMS i.e. University where he is studying.
@Ibrahim Rajar: Thanks for the comment against me. I am not against that boy, he is doing best for himself as well as for Pakistan. But that doesn't make it a story for a news. Atleast according to my understanding.
@Usman Shahid: Why your tail is burning with his job in Microsoft. You narrow minded people can see any news with open heart.
@Mooed: Totally agreed with you Moeed. There are more then tens of thousands of Pakistanis working at world class organization. You would never hear this as news in Europe else where a newspaper will publish a story on someone getting hired by an international company. I have been working as a scientist at CERN (www.cern.ch) for last 7 years but I don't see this a news in a national paper. These news are worth in LUMS's on website but I guess in our social psyche, we like to balloon our national-patriotic egos far too quickly. We need to set our ambitions much higher e.g. winning nobel prize, turing prize etc. I wonder how the HR department in Microsoft will be laughing if they see this news article.
A day will come when some one will get job at Express tribune, it will become headline in express tribune :)
He got the job like so many other Pakistanies in microsoft, he has not become the CEO of Microsoft that it become a news story. A boy running a small software house and giving jobs to local ordinary Pakistanies, is performing better than this guy.
I hope he will become a CEO of Microsoft one day. Wish him best of luck :)
well done boy.....carry on
To my compatriot Mr Oberoi, please do not try to belittle the achievement of this hard working kid. Even in India, if some one from a humble background gets a job in a big MNC like Microsoft, it is quite a achievement. Please try to have a bigger heart and praise others.
Dear Pakistani brother, i would like to congratulate you on this success. i am sure this is just a small step in your life, I hope you have even greater successess. People with limited resources can also become successful in life.
All people giving comments about news but none of the reader commented on interview of the young professional. None of the reader commented on his Ideas. One thing I noted in his interview, how did he prepare for interview. About preparation for interview, he says that he studied a research paper of the very team that was to interview him. “I wanted to understand how they work and what their specific interests are,” he says. This is a good guideline for new generation
From Bahawalnagar to Seattle! What a high jump! Congrats buddy!
this again proves that LUMS is the biggest source of brain drain in pakistan
As a fellow Microsoftie, I welcome Rauf and wish him all the best. I agree with many of the comments thus far. Small stories of success are as important as so-called big stories of mayhem and disappointment - which unfortunately are all too common in the news from South Asia.
Wouldn't it be great if stories such as these were the absolute norm in Pakistan for any ambitious and hardworking young person - as they are in many countries around the world? When was the last time you heard Pakistani media or Public or political leaders (including Imran Khan) mention world class education and achievement as a goal for the country?
Given that, this article is a breath of fresh air. And I welcome it.
Best of luck. Go PAKISTAN Go. Be a proud Pakistani and make your parents proud. Thats what is called hidden talent.
Good Job Sir:) May God The Almighty , The most Beneficent and The most Merciful , Provide you with the greatest success and happiness for you, your Family and our Country Ameen:)
I read almost all the comments. Some people appreciated the Express Tribune, some disliked this as a news. Some readers appreciated the LUMS. and so on ... I think none of the jealous persons read his interview details, his interest in the field of Computer Science, his struggle to become a Computer Scientist, his financial position, his family background etc. Moreover, he has given a tip/ point to young generation that how to prepare for interviews.
As preparation, he says that he studied a research paper of the very team that was to interview him. “I wanted to understand how they work and what their specific interests are,” he says.
This a way to get rid off the interviewers' trap, this is a good point for preparation of interviews.
People sick me when they don't admire other success . Well done Rauf. keep up the good work .
Well done..We are proud of you.
Wow, I guess tribune is running out of news.
Not that I've anything against this fellow, and congratulate him whole heartedly on him getting the offer and wish him great success at Microsoft (MS), but MS hiring university students from Pakistan isn't a new thing. I know tens of people at MS (mostly from FAST and LUMS) who were hired as university students or a few month after graduation. The day I started at MS there were 8 more Pakistani who started with on the same day with me. In fact, I know other students who are waiting visa approval after receiving their offer at the end of last year. Why wasn’t that a news.
@from India: Interesting how some people are incapable of snapping out of their India vs Pakistan mentality. EVERYTHING has to boil down to 'my country is better than yours' for people like you doesn't it?. You could have just said that this isn't really newsworthy (like many other Pakistanis have done here) but oh no no no, we MUST reduce it to an 'India is better than Pakistan' thing.
good to listen one's success .,,.,.,.,.,.,.,.,. My GOD also bless other with such marvlous talent,,.,.!!!!
it is good for the person but it is still brain drain for pakistan, we need to have an environment where people would like to come back and work for the progress of pakistan ... we are loosing the best and keeping the rest (esp those with purchi). I hope he is going to work hard and will help USA and MS but at the same time Pakistan Authorities will envisage a plan where pakistanis can contribute towards a future for pakistan as well. BTW the indian fella who is bragging about indians getting and turning down jobs, there are as many pakistanis working in the best of west as their are indians, not to mention we are only one tenth your population (and are also better than you in sports, from squash to cricket)
It is a good thing I dont know what is the fuss about. There are tens of my colleagues working in Microsoft.
Welldone boy ... wish you all the best .. just join the microsoft team and explore the IT world in USA .. and do remember your nation .
@Iram: I have two parrots, when I read macbeth aloud they listen carefully, how is that? Should it be a news? Come on, its an achievement but not a news! Bravo to the kid, for getting a chance to make dollars
He has been hired before he completed his studies - that's an achievement!
Bravo to you kid!
Always remember, success is just behind you all you you have to keep walking to hold it right in your hand!
Best of luck.
Such pessimistic comments, instead of appreciating all you people can do is whine.. Come on, its one heck of an achievement! If it isn't a big deal for you, keep your comments to your own self.
Congrats Rauf :D
Congratulation.be a proud pakistani..
Good Job Man My Dream Job I wish i also can do same as him
@alam khurshid: Negative Approach. You have a Inferiority complex. This news is 100% worth to read and it encrouge other young people when anyone does hardword then they get good places to have a job.
'Brain drain' at work here, if you understand what brain drain is. :)
lol... I was eager how we Pakis will find a fault in this - well we did. BRAVO
LEARN TO APPRECIATE OR ELSE LEARN NOT TO CLICK ON SUCH NEWS
Dear Muhammad Abdur Rauf:
We all the Pakistanis pray for your well being and prosperity in your future endeavors.
Its not news worthy
To be happy on small things is good for mental health but we seriously have to raise the bar for something to be proud of. Anyhow keep striving and keep bringing more laurals to yourselves, to your family and eventually for your nation. Good debate nonetheless.
This is conspiracy of RAW and MOSSAD, how a devote Muslim can work in a company run by kafirs while we banned a cool drink manufactured by our own people. Lahori lawyers should immediately involve and save our prestige.
@Mujahid Shah: There you go again. Very typical of such Pakistanis to bring religion, Holy Prophet, Holy Quran, Sunnah and such other things. Do these have anything with this young man's achievement, which itself is not such a great achievement. Did he get his computer knowledge from Quran ? Inferiority complex of Muslims at its best !!!!!!!!! Are you preaching religion here are are you appreciating this young man's achievement ? Religion if preached out of context or in inappropriate circumstances will only ridicule the religion.
@Mujahid Shah
My only point was, if this successful person reveals how he balanced between religious studies and science, perhaps, it can help the youngsters.
I will be fair. If this piece of news was published because he was a NOP recipient, thats fair enough. However, landing a SDE in testing job is - not something very exceptional. SDE(testing) is the lowest rank there :) Microsoft has several hundred Pakistanis. Some are even working as project managers. However, they never come to limelight in our local media. Just run some searches in LinkedIn and you shall know what i want to point out. As a side note, he studied in the The Trust school. Almost all his education is in Lahore. Does it matter whether he belonged to Bahawal or Chichu ki malyan? From NUCES-FAST 10-15 people are hired by Fortune 100 companies every year. Its just that the management is not fond of PR like LUMS.
He has been hired as a QA tester, not a software engineer. Still good news for this young man and best of luck to him.
Excellent! Well deserved and well done!
such a rare achievement from pakistan. keep it up bro :)
@Mooed: learn to appreciate!
@alam khurshid: we need to highlight what Pakistan are actually like. Look at his age and his achievements...
@American Pakistani: he'll be done with his graduation by May Insha'Allah so no worries!
@Mr. Righty rightist: Mr Right, wt r u saying. U must appreciate. If a Muslim achieve some great things in a young age, so wts bad. Why today the Muslims worlds are far away from the West. We must follow the Holy Quran. But only prays and recitation of the Holy Quran can't bring success. U must understand the Holy Quran and Sunnah of the Holy Prophet Mohammed (PBUH), which teach us to learn more and more. So, we should be proud that a young PAkistani got an international org job. They will realized, that we are not terrorists but we can do any things.
A better news would have been to display stats how many Pakistanis are working in Microsoft and fortune 500 companies.
Although I truly appreciate the achievement of this individual and congratulate him on his individual success but I cannot stop thinking if this is that big a deal in today's age. I come from India and that too had schooling from a town in Jammu and Kashmir and later on went on to study engineeing in one of the good colleges in India. I represent an engineer's perspective to this article which is that in India, there are companies which offer incentives and profiles way better than microsoft and engineers here even refuse to join them for their" testing" roles. In my previous company 20,000 indian people were working from abroad( just 1 company stats). There are thousands of successful engineers and management professionals here and for us this news is nothing extra-ordinary.
Pakistan should focus on building enterprises to raise employment and not focus on getting jobs in companies abroad. Entrepreneurship is the key to developement. I wish Pakistani intellectual and youth learns from the success story of Indian service industry and raise standards of their people. This should be the priority not India bashing or religious fundamentalism. Hope is the word!
Thanks Rauf for making us proud. Have a great future ahead.
Good news for individual. But there was no need of headline.
A student died as UET Lahore's Mumtaz Hall's washroom wall came crumbling on top of him. That was not news, getting a job in Microsoft is! WOW, double standards!
Hey, I work for Ericsson, World's biggest telecom vendor, Where is my news :P
@AIjazh: Can you please send me the URL for the nature article?
Congrats Rauf, but nothing against any B.School... Microsoft is importing talent from Pakistan from quiet a while now. Every year on average they take 5+ students with them. I wish if remaining stories are highlighted as well. A couple of years back they shortlisted more than 10 with 6 from a single university and that was not LUMS. In the end credit goes to LUMS for publicizing its student's success.
Thats too good for you as well as the people who relate to this field.....Make ur own way and do best to show that Pakistan has all talent in every field of science.Carry On.
There many students in Pakistan working in microsoft, yesterday my teacher at FAST got the job at microsoft, ET for space filling this piece of news is good
And he wont be working for Pakistan anymore. His skills are not use to Pakistani market. Really didnt understand the logic of such a news in E.T. There are tons of Pakistanis working in MS, CISCO, Erikson and many top notch foreign companies.
Shabaash ...
@Sana Jadoon: Behave yourself. We all appreciate his achievement but please don't talk to others in this manner.
Great Work Yaar... and an even greater approach... "do what you love and success will follow" ... took me years to realize this... and I guess some credit is due to "three idiots" for making me realize this! Good Going young man.
Hahaha. There are some dozens of FASTIANS who are already there. Why tribune dont mention them. Every year some some 6-7 people from FAST go there ...
It's seriously depressing to see how much negativity people harbour within themselves for somebody who's outdone his peers in a field that is already too saturated with Toms Dicks and Harrys.
This story should be taken as an inspiration for everyone who is trying to succeed in what they love most. This is an underdog's success story in a country that runs on educational apartheid. Where only those with rich daddies can afford to dream of a better future, but those who are deprived of the resources to make it big are pulled down when they achieve something great.
Shame on Pakistan for raining on the parade of a talented young mind. This country will NEVER appreciate its genius. Look at how they treated Dr Abdus Salam.
And LUMS does deserve a pat on its back for creating opportunities for those in this country who have little other options to turn to for a quality education but lack the necessary resources.
Hearty congratulations to Rauf and his university for doing a country proud.
*Why is it so that when a Pakistani does something great, the Indians do have to comment in a negative manner and it does happen the other way round too! Why cant we all just encourage each other or else dont bother to comment!
LUMS employees and students are creative look how they find a new way to advertise their university and a specific program. ET nice way to get new advertisers.
Congratulations... Keep work hard... Great news for motivating pakistani students...
This is news because half of ET staffers are from LUMS.
WELL DONE RAUF!!
There no need to put this news on the top, there are hundreds of Pakistanis working for microsoft. What's so peculiar about him ?
Good for you Muhammad Rauf .... well done. On reading this the impression given is that the pot of gold lies at the end of a rainbow that lands on a multinational in America. This as news may be reality but it is shallow.
After reading many of the comments, I want to screaam, Jaleeeeeeeeeeeeeeee?? lol
Lol this is a news in Pakistan..its quiet common in India for students to get placed not only in Microsoft but other big firms like Google, facebook,Amazon, dell.etc
What's up with all the negativity in comments on the story? It's a very motivational and positive story. We Pakistanis need to promote these kinds of stories to get the positive message across as well as get our youngs and olds motivated to strive to achieve the best in them and out there.

NOT NEWS WORTHY!!
By the way, there is even more good news coming from young people in Pakistan specially at LUMS. four of Rauf's classfellows have gotten direct admission to the top PhD programs in the world (Harvard, Dartmoth, Penn, etc) while they are still UNDERGRADUATES and with full scholarships!!!
This youth will change the fate of this country, let the cynics sweat in their own nastiness!
Great news and a good story in these days of dismay. Well done LUMS!!!!!!
There is great news coming from LUMS these days. The fact that he is from the NOP programme and while still in his undergraduate here in Pakistan he has (I think 2 others from LUMS also have) gained this opportunity is amazing. WOrking in Microsoft or Apple is not a big news, but getting this opportunity at this stake in his career is an achievement for him and for LUMS. We are seeing that the new programs in LUMS in science and engineering and law and humanities are becoming as successful as the business ones and students at LUMS excel and get opportunity that others will get afters years of finishing university and then having to go to another university.
The reason this is great news is that it shows how there is at least one university in Pakistan from where top companies recruit directly even in undergraduate. Things other will do after a Masters from the US, LUMS students are doing even in undergrad. WELL DONE LUMS!!!!
ET is embarrassed to publish a news which literally is not harmful and not against any bodies interests. While you guys remain silent on such occasions where objection is necessary, it is not fare to blame ET for this news. Should I tell u where to make objection? Well! It is when Sachin's Century placed in front page and Bangla win brushed aside. Now got it? Lmao
Great achievement. This is news because he's a student. Another example of the success of the LUMS NOP program.
very inspirational indeed!
Great Achievement indeed and LUMS need to celebrate this. As its LUMS that selected Rauf for four years in NOP Program and gave free tution, free hostel and even handsome allowance for four years. Just a quick comment to negative thinkers... What you call news is Veena malik, Meera, Misbah, Sania Shoaib, Zardari updates.. Very disappointing negative comments. We should celebrate each and every such success story of our kids. It will motivate other students to follow their foot steps. This kid came from a family who could not afford their son to be a students of LUMS but this kid have proven exceptional. He is a genius. We should think that our great minds are being taken away by such corporations.
ET send your news correspondents to any of the four metros in India and you shall find many people getting an offer from MS and interestingly some even turn down the offer for some other company :-)
I don't understand how this could be a news ?
Well done Rauf. I have no idea why people are so uptight that they fail to appreciate others achievements. Its not just this case only, anybody making it anywhere is a matter of pride and mostly an inspiration for other young people. And God knows we need a lot of inspiration for our young people who are exposed to least productive of ideas on daily basis.
Already too many Pakistanies are working for Microsoft. He is not the first one. So what is the purpose of the news ?
...i know university grads who got into coca-cola, and unilever, and cisco, and google, and p&g, and citi, and ghulam farooq textiles, and tailor abdul hameed and sons. Will you kindly publish 'news' about their first jobs on the front page of your newspaper too ET?
i wish pakistanis were in these positions! http://articles.economictimes.indiatimes.com/2009-10-29/news/276528961indian-microsoft-india-gurdeep-singh-pall
I think tribune does not have news to courage so they just published the hiring process, there are so many working from Pak working in Microsoft and there are tons of companies are Microsoft partners, so why to create a news. Seems to be something paid news.
Great! But I am a Pakistani and I work for Microsoft in Canada. I don't get it.
Oh my!!! News of the Year! I mean how often do you see people from Pakistan working in Microsoft? Well..only too often
Stop hating Haters, it is definitely a big achievement and you should be happy that your country is represented at one of the best institution in the world. It's even really hard for Americans to get a job at Microsoft. Thank you for sharing and shut up to all haters. I can proudly say to my classmates that a person from my country secured a job at Microsoft.
Congrats to Rauf, but every year one or two LUMS grads land a job at Microsoft
Now this is called marketing. Lums got just one student into Microsoft and ET publishes a whole story on it whereas FAST gets 5-6 students whenever they do hiring but due to incompetent administration of FAST fastians don't get a chance to come in limelight. Btw there are hundreds of Pakistanis working in Microsoft, Google etc and I believe LUMS publish this story for only marketing purposes otherwise its not that big achievement.
P.S: My best wishes are with the newly hired employee
Getting a job at Microsoft is indeed an achievement for this person. Congrats.
As individuals and as a nation, however we need to set our sights higher. Start thinking more about starting Pakistani Googles, Microsofts, and less about getting a job in American Google and Microsoft.
You will be nothing more than a replaceable cog even if you work in a huge bureaucracy such as Microsoft. The glamor of Microsoft job will wear off soon enough no matter how much free soda you have available to consume.
That is great accomplishment. Many congratulations.
However on part of ET, there are a number of other guys who have secured job, some have completed their bachelor while others havent and I know them two of them. Dont you think they deserve the same kind of recognition?
hey whats new in it ? Every year Microsoft used to hire professionals from Pakistan ...
Oh Rauf you did great....................you are proud for our BahawalNager
How about instead of being proud of this we create a safe, tolerant and secure environment so that these high-tech multinational companies actually open up branches in our country? That would help out all the talent in our country so that they don't have to go to Dubai or the US to work.
Almost every big high-tech company has branches in our Eastern neighbour, and thousands upon thousands of Indians work in Silicon Valley and all across the US. Highlighting the achievements of one Pakistani comes off as a little pathetic, but I guess it's good to show people in our country that with hard work anything is possible.
Congratulations for the envious job Rauf! But it is pathetic that such genius minds are leaving us and serving others. I wish he had the same opportunity in our country and he had preferred to work here. Only the rubbish have left behind and learned gone abroad for self interests.
Not judging the accomplishment in and of itself I have to say such stories are rather confusing with all aspects taken into the consideration. We and the way we live is supposed to be that of trash. Seems like it should be a national tragedy.
Yeah I would say the same...how is this a news...its encouraging but how is it a news? Has been hired as chief executive officer? hundreds of Pakistani doctors get jobs ar Top-notch US hospitals every year and no report on that? I sent Dawn and ET an email about a Pakistani origin Dr in Chicago, IL whose research was published in NATURE...its pathetic that no one published that!
I wonder how many hours he spent learning Quran and Islam!!!
If he reveals how he belanced religious studies with science, he will be helping a lot of young minds of Pakistan.
Whats the point of this story....Microsoft is just another multinational which really doesn't pay well....next time ET should write an article about how I got a job at Nokia when I graduated and left that job 6 months later
good work kakay!!!!!!
I know Rauf when I was in my final year @ LUMS and living with him as a roommate. I remember those days when he was struggling whether to join computer engineering. I bolstered him to do what he feels is best for him. And he proved us today that his decision was right. One should trust him/herself and things will turn the way you want them
appreciate the achievement but what i really do fail to understand is how this is new? surely the editors at ET need to look at their edittorial policies unless of course this guy is a relative...
One of my brother's friend is working in Apple Inc. as app developer and he is doing well there. Its not a big news. Its just a institute (LUMS) publicity.
Not to take anything away from Rauf and his achievements, but seriously ET? Is this really newsworthy? whats next, breaking news about someone getting a scholarship to harvard? oh wait, that's already been done..
@alam khurshid: Agree. ET should do home work. Hundreds of Pakistani doctors matched at major universities and hospital last week. And thousands from across the border. But should that be a news? No.
@alam khurshid: I could not get how it is pathetic? It is a story of an underprivileged young man who made right choices in life and achieved his dreams through hard work. Just learn to appreciate achievements of others. Look at bright side : despite hardships and lack of resources, people in Pakistan are resilient and hopeful. We need to appreciate it!!!
@alam khurshid: Dear your comment is really pathetic and disappointing. You should learn to appreciate genius people.
@alam khurshid: Small things always matter, great achievement.
I think this is an achievement worth appreciating by the people, and that's why it is great that ET published this news. In a country where news is mostly about PATHETIC Veena Malik, Match-Fixing players, or corrupt politicians, it is some achievement for this student to get into the best tech company in the world, while studying in Pakistan with meager resources. I agree India might have many people working in these companies, but Pakistan is a different story. The Pakistanis that are working here in Microsoft, RIM, Cisco, Google are USUALLY the ones fortunate enough to study in the foreign universities.
@Mooed: How many of them are under-graduate students still studying and residing in Pakistan !
Some people are jealous!
Well done to Abul Rauf..
Good for an individual but nothing significant or inspirational for the nation with such a talent fest. Opportunity is the only lacking. Anyhow "we are happy if you are happy". Congratulations!
This is national news? Our street has one who is a VP in Microsoft besides a host of others who work for Fortune 500 companies !! Peoples, you need to set your sights higher. To do that, you need education - not of the religious kind. That is only good for blowing up things.
Should appreciate the achievement.
I congratulate him but its not a big news at all. This news may motivate students to work hard and target good MNCs. However, there many Pakistani Engineers working in top notch computing companies around the globe.
Why is this news? there are hundreds of Pakistanis working in Microsoft, Google, Cisco etc
Pathetic! Is this really newsworthy? A country of 250 million people writing about a person getting a job. Our standards of achievement are very low. As a pakistani engineer at a high tech company abroad, i know that tens of thousands of engineers are hired from our eastern neighbor to work abroad at the top tech companies. This is not the least bit newsworthy.
young generation should follow this boy. The only way to succeed is honesty, hard work and knowledge.
"Where there is a will, there's a way." Thank you Rauf.. for giving us Pakistanis this happiness. =)
