Hang on to those receipts
Sanaullah calls for amendments to Consumer Act.
LAHORE:
Law Minster Rana Sanaullah said on Thursday there was a need to amend the Consumer Act so that the poor could benefit from it. He added that if a proposal regarding amending the Act was put before the Assembly he would support it.
Sanaullah was addressing a seminar held in connection with International Day for Consumer Rights, which had been organised by Directorate of Provincial Consumer Protection Council at Punjab Cultural Complex.
Sanaullah also recommended that a person well versed with the problems faced by consumers should be appointed the chairman of the consumer court. He said quacks looted suffering people by advertising cures for incurable diseases. He said practical actions needed to be taken.
Punjab Consumer Protection Council Director Saeed Akhtar Ansari said funds were needed so that the public be made better aware of their rights as consumers.
Industry, Trade and Investment Secretary Dr Shujaat Ali said that for a society to prosper, its products needed to maintain a certain standard. He said stern action must be taken against those selling substandard goods.
The secretary said consumers must get receipts for their purchases as proof of purchase in any lawsuit filed against shopkeepers. He said consumers must also check rate lists displayed at shops.
Sanaullah later told the media that he had sent a summary to the chief minister regarding the constitution of a bench in Faisalabad, Sargodha and Sahiwal. A bench will also be constituted in Gujranwala and one in Dera Ghazi Khan later, he said.
He predicted that PTI would end up being divided into four groups headed by Jahangir Tareen, Javed Hashmi, Shah Mehmood Qureshi and Imran Khan.
Responding to a question regarding the Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Assembly Raja Riaz, he said that the party leadership had asked him not to respond to the comments Riaz had made.
