FAISALABAD:

A forum set up by the Punjab Medical College and the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad over 10 years ago will be revived to start research on pressing environmental issues faced by the country.

This was decided in a meeting between PMC Principal Dr Zahid Yasin Hashmi and UAF Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan on Wednesday.

The platform named Environment Watch will be used to conduct research on products ranging from disinfectants to food supplements.

Several research organisations such as Ayub Research and National Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (NIBGE) would be represented in the forum. Prof Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan said the forum would work on the pattern of Faisalabad Development Forum.

He said food supplements available in the country were mostly imported and expensive.

He said supplements were required by people suffering from liver ailments. He said with supplements being manufactured inside the country and marketed on cheaper rates, the cost of treatment for these patients could be brought down.

He said a multidisciplinary degree programme in environment should be started to train experts in solving climate change and other environment problems faced by the country.

UAF, University of Glasgow to start split degree programme

Meanwhile, the University of Agriculture Faisalabad and the University of Glasgow will soon sign a memorandum of understanding to start a split degree programme in social sciences.

This was decided in a meeting between UoG senior officer Caroline Boddie and UAF Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan on Thursday.

Ms Boddie later addressed the students at the New Senate Hall and briefed them on UoG.
