LAHORE:

The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has approved the name Ameeruddin Medical College for the Post Graduate Medical Institute Medical College.

This was announced by Prof Tariq Salahuddin, the Lahore General Hospital dean and the Post Graduate Medical Institute principal, on Saturday.

Prof Salahuddin said that the name had been proposed by PGMI faculty members in recognition of the services rendered by Dr Ameeruddin, the emiratis professor of surgery. He said that the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council had also approved the name.

Prof Salahuddin said that the new medical college would be affiliated with the Lahore General Hospital. Its students, he said, would be taught by the PGMI faculty.

The principal said that a PhD programme was also being started at the PGMI. This programme, he said, would help PGMI become one of the best medical institutions in the region.

Prof Salahuddin also said that a non-governmental organisation had promised to provide $1 million to the PGMI for a programme under which doctors would be sent to the US for higher education, specialisation and research.
