Aku conference: Doctors speak on treating the body

Doctors at the Whole Person Medicine Conference stressed the importance of treating the ‘whole’ person.

KARACHI:
Doctors at the Whole Person Medicine Conference, being held at the Aga Khan University (AKU), stressed the importance of treating the ‘whole’ person rather than only the symptoms. They said that a person’s body, mind and spirit should also be kept in mind during treatment. The Education, Partners in International Medical Education director, Dr David Chaput de Saintonge, said that the whole person medicine represents a paradigm shift in the practice of medicine. Along with medical problems, it takes into consideration the psychological, social and spiritual needs of a person. Post-conference workshops have also been planned on related topics, including incorporating spirituality in medical care, whole person care of diabetics, and skills required for person-centred consultations. The conference will end today.
