HYDERABAD:

Sindhi poetry and literature buffs celebrated the 89th birth anniversary of revered poet, the late Shaikh Ayaz, on Friday with seminars, musical events and theatre performances based on his work.

A group of writers, poets, public figures and officers from the culture department laid a mantle on the grave of the late poet and offered fateha at his mausoleum in Bhitshah town.

The department also organised a picture exhibition at the Zafar Kazmi Gallery of Sindh Museum in Hyderabad. Renowned writers, Muhammad Ibrahim Joyo, Taj Joyo and others also cut a birthday cake for Ayaz at the mausoleum.

Ayaz rose to fame with his poetic compilation ‘Bhanwar Bharee Aakash’ (Whirlpools in the skies) which was published in 1963. His subsequent translations of Shah Jo Risalo, of 18th century Sufi poet Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai, from Sindhi to Urdu established Ayaz as an authority. Ayaz was born in Shikarpur on March 2, 1923 and died in December 1997 at the age of 74.

He has 50 books to his credit and also served at important official posts and also was the vice chancellor of Sindh University.

According to the director of the culture department, Muhammad Ali Manjhi, the department has published 20 volumes of Ayaz’s books and also introduced an award for writers in Urdu language.
