Glass ceilings: Lawyers criticise system

Pointed out that their professional careers usually hit a ceiling because of their ethnicity.

SUKKUR:
Lawyers who work outside Karachi have pointed out that their professional careers usually hit a ceiling because of their ethnicity. They gathered on Thursday to air their grievances at a “Convention against Discrimination in Elevation of Judges” organised by the Sindh High Court Bar Association (SHCBA) in Sukkur at the high court premises. Office bearers of the Pakistan Bar Council, Sindh Bar Council and the provincial and district high court bar associations attended. The general secretary of the SHCBA (Sukkur), Qurban Malano, criticised what he said was the bias of the judicial commission that appoints judges to the Sindh High Court (SHC). He said that while the struggle for the restoration of the national judiciary had originated in Sukkur, the ingrained discrimination in the system has made it difficult for lawyers from Sukkur to be elevated to the SHC.
