Top-seed David Ferrer of Spain defeated local favourite Santiago Gonzalez 6-1, 6-2 to reach the second round of the Acapulco International. Ferrer, attempting to win his third title of the season, needed just over an hour to eliminate his Mexican opponent. The world number five won the Copa Claro last week in Argentina to add to the title he claimed in New Zealand in January. Meanwhile, second-seed Nicolas Almagro beat fellow Spaniard Pere Riba 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 while third-seed Gilles Simon of France suffered a 6-7, 3-6 loss to Carlos Berlocq of Argentina. Swiss player Stanislas Wawrinka also posted a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 first-round win over former world number one Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain.
