No end in sight: Police register FIR as Warid loses employee
Asif Butt, 32, son of Naeem Butt, was shot and killed outside his home in Clifton’s block 2.
KARACHI:
The police registered an FIR for the murder of a Warid Telecom employee on Tuesday.
Asif Butt, 32, son of Naeem Butt, was shot and killed outside his home in Clifton’s block 2, in the jurisdiction of Boat Basin police, on Monday night. Police registered FIR No. 97/12 against unidentified persons on the complaint of the victim’s brother, Kashif.
SI Nasarullah, while quoting witnesses, said that two culprits were waiting outside Butt’s home at night when the victim turned up. After drawing attention to them, one of the suspects opened fire at close range, killing Butt on the spot.
The deceased was the father of a small boy. Police said that the attacker used a 30-bore pistol and probably knew Butt as well. Nevertheless, they cautioned that the investigation was still in its initial stages and they could not point to any specific motive.
This was the fifth incident since December 2011 when criminals have targeted telecommunication outlets or their employees. Telenor and Mobilink franchises came under attack, in which four people died and seven others were injured. A regional sales officer of Warid was also shot dead at the company’s franchise in Mehmoodabad. The Crime Investigation Department (CID) claimed that it had killed a mastermind behind these attacks during an encounter in Dalmia, but apparently to no avail.
“It is possible that this latest incident is linked to previous attacks on employees and offices of cellular companies. But we suspect that Butt’s killing was a result of a personal enmity,” said Nasarullah.
