Police had sought to cross examine the complainant afresh.

LAHORE:

Justice Malik Shahzad Ahmad Khan of the Lahore High Court on Tuesday declined to hear a petition by police officials accused of involvement in the Sahiwal lawyers burning case, citing personal reasons.

Justice Manzoor Malik, the other member of the division bench hearing the plea, referred the case to the chief justice to fix before another bench.

The police officials had sought permission from the trial court to cross examine afresh the complainant of the case, then Sahiwal Bar Association president Usman Sheikh, but the trial court rejected their plea. They asked the LHC to direct the trial court to allow them to cross examine the witness again. The LHC has already barred an anti-terrorism court of Faisalabad from concluding the trial and summoned the record of the case.

On May 4, 2007, when lawyers across the country were striving for the restoration of the judiciary, lawyers in Sahiwal staged a torch-bearing procession. According to the complainant, the police sprayed petrol on the protestors and baton-charged them, resulting in fatal burns to 12 lawyers.
