May12 mayhem: SHC puts Musharraf on notice for April 3

The bench has ordered “publication of notice in a newspaper circulated in London” at the cost of petitioner.

KARACHI:

The Sindh High Court (SHC) has taken up a petition on the May 12, 2007 events when at least 50 people were killed as political activists fought battles on the city streets ahead of the chief justice’s arrival.

A division bench of SHC comprising Justice Shahid Anwar Bajwa and Justice Nisar Muhammad Shaikh, while hearing a petition filed by Syed Iqbal Kazmi, has put former president Pervez Musharraf on notice for April 3.

The petitioner seeks rehearing of the May 12 case as dozens of citizens were killed in fierce fights on Karachi roads by miscreants who tried to stop the deposed Chief Jusice, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, from attending golden jubilee celebrations of SHC Bar Association. One of the parties in the present coalition government announced a competing rally resulting in the lawlessness, leading eventually to violent clashes between the two sides.

Meanwhile, the bench has ordered “publication of notice in a newspaper circulated in London” at the cost of petitioner.
