The police are yet to comply with the Lahore High Court’s (LHC) orders that all barriers placed on roads outside police offices be removed because they are a hindrance to commuters.
Speaking to reporters, new Inspector General (IG) of Punjab Police Habibur Rehman said that he was not in favour of the barriers and police would sort out the problem.
However, barriers are still in place outside the offices of the IG and DIG (Operations) on Outfall Road, as a result of which a section of the road has been closed for three years. A section of Abbot Road in front of the DIG’s (Investigation) office has also been partially closed for several years.
On February 17, the LHC ordered DCO Ahad Cheema, CCPO Ahmad Raza Tahir and DIG (Operations) Ghulam Mahmood Dogar to remove the barriers.
This was not the first time that the LHC had told police to act against road barriers. About a year ago, after the LHC took suo motu notice, the police removed the barriers outside the CCPO’s office on Fatima Jinnah Road. The court later ordered the barriers outside the IG and DIG’s (Operations) offices removed as well. The barriers were removed but only temporarily.
