CIA collaborators: 11 accomplices of Dr Afridi suspended
Dr Afridi allegedly arranged a private vaccination campaign to trace the al Qaeda leader.
PESHAWAR:
Health authorities in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa have ordered disciplinary action against 11 accomplices of Dr Shakil Afridi, who is accused of collaborating with the US and helping it track down former al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.
Last year, British newspaper the Guardian reported that the CIA launched a fake vaccination drive in Abbottabad to gather the DNA information of Bin Laden’s family.
It said that Khyber Agency surgeon Dr Afridi, under the pretext of a private polio vaccination campaign, launched a CIA-sponsored programme to trace the al Qaeda leader in Abbottabad.
In an order issued by the provincial health department, nine lady health workers, a medical officer and a female staff member of the national programme on family planning and primary health from Abbottabad have been suspended in relation to the fake vaccination campaign run by Dr Afridi.
A senior official of the health department confirmed that the names of these individuals had been sent to the EDO health Abbottabad and would face an inquiry.
