KARACHI:

At least seven people including women and children were reportedly killed and several others were wounded in a road accident when a bus rammed into a concrete height barrier which collapsed on the bus late Saturday night in Korangi.

The bus was carrying over 35 passengers to a wedding in Liaquatabad when the collision took place within the limits of Korangi Industrial Area police.

It took nearly 30 minutes to successfully remove all the passengers from the vehicle as the front portion of the bus was completely damaged. Law enforcement agencies and volunteers reached the site of the accident to help with the rescue operation.

Several injured passengers were taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for medico-legal formalities. According to sources, four women, two children and a man were among the dead while some of the injured were in critical condition.

“No heavy traffic is allowed on the causeway,” said Deputy Commissioner of the East Jan Mohammad Qazi, adding that the driver was being held responsible for the accident.

The height barrier had been constructed to restrict vehicles above eight feet, adding that it is the first such incident. SHO Malik Ayub said low-visibility, no street lights or reflectors may have caused the accident.
