Get ready for fashion week fever

Socialites and style mavens should start prepping from now, as the Pakistan Fashion Design Council’s (PFDC) fashion week is scheduled to take place in Karachi this October.

Following up from the success of the event this February, which featured designers such as HSY, Ammar Belal, Sara Shahid and Iman Ahmed, and had a number of foreign fashion journalists and buyers in attendance, this year’s edition will take place in Lahore.

According to PFDC chairperson Sehyr Saigol, “A press conference is going to take place in the second week of August, probably on August 18 in which we will share more details.” However she asserted, “More designers will be participating in the event.”

While designer Kamiar Rokni confirmed the event would be held this October, he had few other details to offer.

Saad Zaidi, PFDC’s operational manager told The Express Tribune, “The specified dates are from October 11 - 14, 2010. We are still busy in short listing the designers who will be participating in the event, but as many as 32 designers will be participating.” Due to security concerns, the location of the event in Karachi has not been disclosed.

However, fashion week fatigue may not hit in as badly this year. While there were a total of six fashion weeks scheduled for 2010 - two editions each of Karachi Fashion Week, PFDC Fashion Week and Fashion Pakistan Week - at least one has been moved to 2011.

Tehmina Khaled, the spokesperson for the Karachi-based Fashion Pakistan council told The Express Tribune, “Fashion Pakistan Week will take place in January 2011.” She did not have any other details as “there is still some time for us to plan things out.”

Fashion weeks have become a fixture in the social calendar. Lahore’s PFDC Fashion Week was heavy on the entertainment factor - Strings, Ali Zafar and Sonu Dangerous performed, while Hadiqa Kiani was a celebrity model for several designers, and it will be interesting to see how the council can replicate the model in Karachi. Regardless of the location, invitations to the events, whether they are in Karachi or Lahore, are a covetable item as everyone wants to be seated in the front row and check out next season’s trends firsthand.
