NCJP seminar: Protection of religious minorities sought
Participants call for independent National Human Rights Institution.
FAISALABAD:
The National Commission for Justice and Peace has condemned the increasing incidents of terrorism, torture and sectarianism and demanded that the government takes effective and practical steps to ensure rule of law and protect religious minorities.
Speaking at a seminar on ‘Obstacles and Resolve to Building Peace at Local Level’, at the Catholic Church, Chak Jhumra, National Commission for Justice and Peace leader reiterated their commitment to promoting tolerance, religious freedoms, pluralism and peace in the country.
They stressed a need for social and religious harmony saying it was dependent on the exercise of principles of equality, non- discrimination and enjoyment of rights by the citizens under the rule of law.
NCJP Executive Director Peter Jacob, Jamaat-i-Islami ameer Yaseen Kahlon, Tajir Baradari president Mian Muhammad Rehan, Father Patrick Anthony and Father Mushtaq also spoke at the occasion.
A resolution adopted on the occasion sought government’s promptness in establishment of an independent and impartial National Human Rights Institution.
The participants appealed the members of the parliament to demonstrate their commitment towards human rights by abolishing the legislation contradictory to the international human rights’ standards.
